Brittle Deformation in the Neoproterozoic Basement of Southeast Brazil: Traces of Intraplate Cenozoic Tectonics

The basement of southeast Brazil is traditionally interpreted as the result Neoproterozoic and early Paleozoic orogenic cycles. Wide regions Atlantic Plateau (southeast Brazil) are characterized by rocks tectonic structures Precambrian age. According to classical literature, these have not been affected tectonics since Miocene, despite fact that they rest close Cenozoic basins, which suffered recent deformation. objective this research evaluate role neotectonics in Plateau. This task accomplished through a multiscalar approach includes lineament domain analysis from regionally sized digital elevation models structural geology field surveys. Lineaments automatically detected statistically analyzed. Azimuthal analyses data on faults fractures polynomial Gaussian fit enables identification main trends. Fault-slip direct inversion means original Monte Carlo allows one compute multiple paleostresses produced measured fault population. results show presence principal ENE–WSW domain, related an old shear zone possibly reactivated Miocene. One computed fault-slip agreement with neotectonic stress-field proposed other authors.
